What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a skilled verbal communication, used during hypnosis, which helps direct a client’s imagination in such a way as to bring about intended alterations in sensations, perceptions, feelings, thoughts and behaviour. In a typical hypnotherapy session, the hypnotherapist will ask the client questions about previous medical history, general health and lifestyle. The hypnotherapist and client will decide together on the changes or goals that they wish to achieve. To put it simply hypnotherapy re-programs the subconscious mind to change its belief system surrounding the thoughts and behaviors that is causing the distress to the client.

Types of Hypnotherapy

As a client you do not need to understand the different types of hypnotherapy as your therapist will aim to ensure that they use the best methods to suit you as an individual and your particular issues.

As every person is different the best results will be obtained by utilizing the methods that each person will respond to.

Your therapist may have studied and/or trained using a specific type of hypnotherapy or they may have studied a number of different models (or modalities). For example:

In “Traditional Hypnosis” the therapist gives direct suggestions to the unconscious mind. This type of hypnosis works well with those who accept what they are told.

In “Ericksonian Hypnosis,” the therapist will use metaphors to give suggestions and ideas to your unconscious mind. This can be very effective because it helps to eliminate the resistance to change that may come from the conscious mind.

Hypnotherapy is widely used for all psychosomatic disorders. (i.e. those mental and emotional states which actually produce physical symptoms)

In a nutshell, hypnotherapy can generally help with any problem you’re finding hard to handle on your own – thoughts and actions you’d like to banish or acquire, or emotional suffering that is too overwhelming or has gone on too long. What Is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a general term that is used to describe the process of treating psychological disorders and mental distress. During this process, a trained psychotherapist helps the client tackle a specific or general problem such as a particular mental illness or a source of life stress. Depending on the approach used by the therapist, a wide range of techniques and strategies can be used. However, almost all types of psychotherapy involve developing a therapeutic relationship, communicating and creating a dialogue and working to overcome problematic thoughts or behaviours.

Psychotherapy is increasingly viewed as a distinct profession in its own right, but many different types of professionals engage in psychotherapy regularly. Such individuals include clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, marriage and family therapists, social workers, mental health counsellors, occupational therapists and psychiatric nurses.

Types of Psychotherapy

When many people hear the word psychotherapy, they immediately imagine a patient lying on a couch talking while a therapist sits in a nearby chair jotting down thoughts on a yellow notepad.

While many psychotherapists do use this classic type of talk therapy, there are actually a wide variety of techniques and practices used in psychotherapy. The exact approach used in each situation can vary based upon a variety of factors, including the training and background of the therapist, the preferences of the client and the exact nature of problem the client is experiencing.

What are the benefits of Psychotherapy?

The most important factor in successful therapy is the client, not the therapist.

Participating in psychotherapy offers a number of benefits for the client. It is usually helpful to have somebody who really does understand you. Therapy may give the client a fresh perspective on a difficult problem and direct the client towards a solution. Most patients will say that the benefits of psychotherapy include:

What are the disadvantages of psychotherapy?

Some clients may find that the treatment results in changes they had not expected, or did not want.
Some people do not like to have to relive unpleasant events (not all psychotherapy techniques make the client do this).
